Slaughter On The Boards, The Absence Of Jesus & Other Reasons Why The Celtics Lost

We gave you the instant analysis right after the game, and followed that up with a more in-depth look in Smack, but for all the Boston Celtics fans out there, we figured we’d break it down just for you. Here is the good and bad of Game 7:

GOOD
The Celtics came out and played right from the get-go unlike Game 6. Their defense was absolutely superb, especially the way they helped on Kobe and in the post, forcing other guys to beat them. This was an incredibly well executed game plan, and the Celtics got beat by guys not named Kobe – which was probably the way they wanted it if they were to lose. Their defense also forced the Lakers, and Kobe in particular, into a ton of tough shots, most of which didn’t go in. Rondo pushed the ball in transition at every opportunity. He had a great first half and the Celtics got out to their early lead because of their ball movement and ability to execute in transition. Without Perkins, the C’s got outstanding efforts from Big Baby, KG and ‘Sheed, they all came to play and did their best to compensate for Kendrick.

BAD
Ray Allen’s inability to hit open shots killed them. The Celtics got him great looks all game, and his misses really deflated Boston, and himself. They did not gang rebound. The Lakers manhandled them on the offensive glass, and the Celtics could not effectively come up with a strategy to overcome their lack of size and length. Another sore spot for the Celtics was their lack of a go-to guy down the stretch. They couldn’t rely on anyone to get a good look at the rim, and were forced into a lot of bad shots. And with each bad possession they lost a little more confidence. Getting into foul trouble early in the fourth quarter hurt them tremendously, as the Lakers scored the majority of their points from the stripe down the stretch, and were not forced to take the tough shots they had been earlier in the game.

Shout Outs To The Shrink, An Angry Spaniard & Other Reasons The Lakers Won

Pathetic. That’s how I would’ve put it. That was just a pathetic offensive performance. It’s really the only way to describe a game when a team shoots 32 percent from the field and their two best players go 6-26 in the first half of the biggest game of their lives. When Ron Artest is your best option for putting the ball in the hoop, you’ve got problems.

Phil Jackson put the arctic conditions in perspective: “It was tough sledding out there.”

But as out of sync as L.A. was on the offensive end, their defense was about as good as it gets. Through the first eight minutes of the fourth quarter, the Lakers held Boston to just two field goals- a Kevin Garnett layup and a short jumper from Ray Allen. Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom did an incredible job rotating on defense, hedging on every screen. Artest was overwhelming in his control of Paul Pierce during the final period as well. The Truth went just 1-5 with four points in the fourth.

Once they fell behind 23-14 at the end of the first quarter, L.A. was climbing uphill the rest of the way. But because there defense was so good, Boston was never able to really open up a cushion. Both times that the Celtics went up by double digits, the Lakers cut it right down. Boston couldn’t score much either and Allen and Pierce combined to shoot 8-29 for the game.

There’s a cliché out there that says Game 7s aren’t about numbers, rather heart and desire. That was never more evident than last night. You think Artest didn’t want this? For a while, he was the only Laker involved in the game, the only one who seemed to realize the gravity of the situation. A few years ago, David Stern wanted the Queensbridge Kid out for good. Tonight, he played the way he had to, as if his whole career and image was on the line. Pierce wanted to win. Artest had to win. Those five steals and 20 points he delivered were the difference.

There was Andrew Bynum playing on one wheel, having his knee drained multiple times in a month just so he could give his eight minutes. Derek Fisher was there, making a big fourth quarter shot again, even after enduring months of talk about how his ineffectiveness would derail this repeat run. Odom, with all the personal tragedy and individual basketball troubles, was still continuing to put those around him ahead of himself.

Gasol, the whipping boy for so long, took it right to Garnett and the rest of the Boston frontline in the fourth quarter with nine final period points. Will there ever be a question again about his toughness? He is still timid and not commanding at times, but in a Game 7, Gasol had 18 rebounds. His longtime nemesis, the man who went out of his way to insult him and seemed to relish making him look bad – Garnett – had 3. Think about that for a second, okay?

And don’t let anyone say this game told us nothing about Kobe Bryant. He was out of his element, forcing shots and not playing team ball. That wasn’t the real Kobe out there last night. Hell nah. That game was exactly what Kobe Bean Bryant is about: a relentless, tireless will to win. His desire was never more prominent. Missed shots weren’t going to deter him. Neither were double-digit second half deficits. He just kept coming. He kept competing. He was going to shoot 6-36 if that’s what it took.

The man has outlasted any competition he’s ever had. Tonight was no different.

While that relentlessness manifested itself in some ugly shots – airballs and off-balance fadeaways – it also rubbed off on the rest of the team. It helped him grab 15 rebounds in a game where the Lakers were again dominant on the backboards.

This was about Bryant doing what everyone said he couldn’t: get teammates to love him and fight with him.

Numbers were thrown out the window in this one. This game focused on something harder to pinpoint, impossible to see. That was not the same L.A. team that lost in the Finals in 2008. That was not even the same unit that won last year. It was an older group, wiser and tougher. When it came down to winning time, they faced down the Boston veterans and took what was theirs.

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season & Playoffs

Good Day po.... yan ang analysis, pero hindi siguro. Go OKC, BEAT L.A.

Michael Jordan may be the Greatest player who ever played the game, but come to think of it: Kobe has been to the NBA Finals 7 times, Jordan 6. Statistically, angat si Jordan kasi he was the main man even during his rookie year. In Kobe's case, he played second fiddle to Shaq during their 3 year championship run. One more ring to equal Jordan's 6, then maybe we can start the argument hehehe

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season, Playoffs & The Finals

yeah!

the only problem ng lakers is to retain phil jackson other than this, the team still have kobe, pau, odom and artest for the next seasons. i do think signing a free agent point guard will probably boost them.

i just read that blake of clippers is unrestricted free agent.. lakers, please consider him.

LA LAKERS

Offensive:
105.9, 11th

Defensive:
101.1, 6th

Under contract:
F: Ron Artest
G: Kobe Bryant
C: Andrew Bynum
F: Pau Gasol
F: Lamar Odom
G: Sasha Vujacic
F: Luke Walton

Free agents:
G: Shannon Brown (Player option)
G: Jordan Farmar (restricted)
G: Derek Fisher (unrestricted)
C: DJ Mbenga (unrestricted)
F: Adam Morrison (restricted)
F: Josh Powell (unrestricted)

Areas of Strength:
The Lakers are a good defensive team, able to play big or small, and have several players who move the ball and can handle. It helps, naturally, to have stars to build upon, but Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol have a lot of help.

Needs work:
They have so much invested in Andrew Bynum, financially and in commitment while turning down numerous trades through the years, but no sign his body is likewise dependable.

Two Stats That Matter:
3 -- Consecutive seasons the Lakers have been in the Western Conference finals.

4 -- Consecutive seasons the Lakers have brought back at least 11 players from the previous seasons, a sign of stability in what too often appears to be an unstable locker room.

The Way To Go:
The Lakers generally don't bother much with the draft. Their offseason tinkering usually involves free agency, and this summer it won't be anything more than the mid-level exception, if that. A lot about the potential next step will depend on whether L.A. wins another title..

***** si vujacic pala ang under contract while morrison and others are free.. just sign shannon brown and trade luke walton.

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season, Playoffs & The Finals

Some players don't give a damn about money just to win a ring. Except for Ariza who wanted more money. Thanks anyways for giving Artest.

Bro, ang alam ko, management ng Lakers and Rockets ang nagdecide ng sign and trade - NOT Trevor. Hindi sya ang nagdemand ng trade. Correct me na lang if I'm wrong.

Hmm, dare to compare? Rather not. MJ started his NBA career after having the experience of NCAA. Kobe? Teenager pa lang nung nagsimula. So I think hindi magandang basis of comparison ang pagiging go-to guy ng isang player sa umpisa ng career nya. Especially since contrast ang start ng dalawang kino-compare.

Pero what I can say is maganda ang impact ni LeBron nung biglang pasok nya ng Cavs.

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season, Playoffs & The Finals

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season, Playoffs & The Finals

Pero I can appreciate skills ni LBJ.

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season, Playoffs & The Finals

Re: NBA 2009- 2010 Season, Playoffs & The Finals

Sana makakuha ng point guard ang LA Lakers this off season.

What I mean is statistics-wise bro. Jordan averaged more than 30pts since he was the go-to guy even when he was a rookie that's why angat sya kay Kobe statistically.:salute:
